“God hath decreed in himself, from all eternity…” (1689, 3.1)
What an opening statement to the section on God’s Decree. What else would God do in eternity except decree his will and then execute it in both eternity and time. In himself simply points to the fact that in eternity past there was God and only God. This is a very powerful statement about God. He needs no counsel. He is sufficient in himself. He is content in himself. And his decree must be done because he decreed it. Glorious God.
